Resource Title The future of mass customization in Philippine fashion E-commerce through scenario building
Date Issued 17 January 2021
Abstract Sizing and fit issues were concerns with e-commerce fashion retailing since consumers were unable to fit items in-person. These led to product returns and losses on the part of the online retailer. Another key issue with fashion was sustainability. Fashion was one of the top contributors to waste on the planet due to overproduction and mass market business models.
Technological advancements in Industry 4.0 such as computer aided design, 3D body scanning, 3D printing, data science and analytics, artificial intelligence etc. have enabled mass customization to improve clothing fit, sizing, and sustainability for the fashion industry. In mass customization, the demands of each individual customer are met, yet products are made with mass production efficiency. This study was a technological foresight that used scenario building on the implications of mass customization on Philippine fashion e-commerce. Results showed that trends leaned toward a likelihood of adoption of mass customization as a business model for fashion e-commerce retailing. Scenarios implicated foreign direct investment in the Philippines reaping first mover advantages unless local fashion e-commerce firms successfully leapfrog using emerging technologies in mass customization.
