Resource Title User's attitudes and perceptions on the navigability of academic library websites from selected members of South Manila Educational Consortium (SMEC) libraries
Date Issued July 2015
Abstract The study determined the users' attitudes and perceptions on the navigability of the library websites of selected South Manila Educational Consortium (SMEC) libraries. It aimed to a) measure the user’s perception of the library website based on satisfaction and perceived value; b) gauge the user’s attitudes towards the website based on navigability; and c) find out if gender, age, educational attainment, length of internet experience, and hours spent on the web per day affect the users’ attitudes and perceptions of their library websites. A total of 126 library website users participated in the study. The selected SMEC libraries are Adamson University, De La Salle University, Philippine Normal University, St. Scholastica’s College, and University of the Philippines-Manila.

The respondents are composed of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, librarians, library personnel, library directors/head librarians, website maintenance officers, administrators and visitors/outsiders. They were requested to undergo six performance tasks (3 required and 3 random) before they proceeded to the website navigability evaluation questionnaire.

Results showed that library website users from the selected SMEC libraries have a positive attitude towards the navigability of their library websites. Perceptions in the areas of satisfaction and perceived value were also positive. User variables such as gender, age, education, length of internet experience, and hours spent on the web per day, though have effect on the result of the library evaluation, are not significant. This means that results were based directly on the navigability performance of the library websites and the user’s attitudes and perceptions regardless of their demographic and other related variables.

The research recommended to conduct a follow-up study on how to improve and broaden the evaluation by including other website characteristics such as usability, connectivity, layout, and others, which are also useful for the improvement of library websites being evaluated.
