Resource Title A Case Study for the Exhibit Space of the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design in the Proposed College of Home Economics Museum
Date Issued 30 May 2018
Abstract This case study aimed to explore aspects of exhibit design such as space planning, visual elements, and visitor experience based on the theory of functionalism by Heurberger and Special (1997) for the proposed BSID exhibit space in the College of Home Economics museum. The study utilized a triangulation of multiple methods, faceto-face interviews, survey, and photo documentation of past exhibit projects, supplemented by secondary sources of data. Through purposive sampling, two educators in the discipline of Interior Design, three interior designers, a museum curator, and the faculty-in-charge of the CHE Costume Museum, were all selected as respondents. Variables of exhibit narrative, display strategies and exhibit content were used to analyse what framework would best suit the proposed space. Findings suggest that the exhibit
narrative should be grounded on academic excellence, commitment to national development, and social responsibility. The display strategies consider the elements identified in the framework of functionalism (Heurberger and Special, 1997). Interior elements of space planning, design elements and principles, finish materials and decorative elements, lighting, and furniture are the focus of this variable. Appropriate provisions based on these aspects are addressed. Finally, the exhibit content must be knowledge outcomes in the BS Interior Design courses that address the learning points
and objectives of the course syllabus. These elements of the framework proposal may guide the upcoming Interior Design exhibit space towards effective planning and integration of the philosophies of the University, the College and of the program.
