Resource Title Beyond Bread and Butter: the Filipino’s Meaning-Making of Their Roles as Breadwinners Through Social Media Domestication
Date Issued 3 July 2024
Abstract As the youngest children in our families, a notable aspect of the evolving family dynamics we observed is the succession of the breadwinner’s role. With the growing dependence on social media among Filipino families, we have come to recognize a broader trend in how this reliance transforms family social systems, shaping the meanings attached to family roles. However, there is a notable research gap in exploring the manifestations of social media use among Filipino breadwinners and their families, particularly regarding how this practice influences the meaning-making of their role. Guided by Structural Symbolic Interaction Theory and Dimensional Model of Domesticating Technology, we employed in-depth semi-structured interviews to uncover the interplay between social interactions and technological adoption in the meaning-making of the breadwinner’s role. Findings reveal that the domestication of social media in Filipino households facilitates familial coordination, reflecting shared convenience and collaborative utilization among breadwinners. However, social media usage is deeply intertwined with familial dynamics, shaping communication patterns, and reinforcing cultural values. While complementing real-life needs, social media does not substitute face-to-face interactions, reshaping breadwinners' views of their roles and demarcating their familial relationships in transactional interactions.
