Resource Title The Redevelopment of the Diliman Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Date Issued March 2011
Abstract Over the years, technology and science have continuously advanced and are rapidly developing as we try to keep track of the latest innovations and developments. In the field of veterinary medicine alone, the advancements had lead to the increase of
practitioners, who run their own veterinary clinics and similar infrastructures. With the absence of design guidelines for veterinary hospitals, most veterinary hospitals are likened to human hospitals due to the fact that the activities are very similar.
The designer proposed the redevelopment of the Diliman Veterinary Teaching Hospital for the College of Veterinary Medicine to be able to keep up with the current trends in veterinary practice, and to cater to the needs of all its end users (which are not only humans but also animals). The addition of research facility and collaborating areas were also considered. This shall provide the students with a continuous flow of information, in class and during the immersion.
Several minor concepts were integrated in the overall design. Examples of which are: zoning to separate public from private areas, continuity of landscaping, and views. All of these correspond to the major concept: designing for both man and animal.
The design programming was based on the spatial requirements of the two users: human and animal. Spaces for humans included: student and staff dormitory, staff break room, classrooms, library, and offices. Spaces designed with consideration for animal needs were the animal boarding facility, exercise parks, and hospital areas like hydrotherapy and surgery.
The redevelopment for the Diliman Veterinary Teaching Hospital shall reinforce the College’s vision of continued excellence in the field of veterinary practice and research in the Philippines. It is hoped that the facility will serve as a venue for the
College to show the public the importance of veterinary medicine, and to establish the College’s pride as being the forerunner and leader of veterinary
