Abstract There is an increasing number of female varsity athletes dropping out from their varsity teams despite the various health benefits gained from sports participation such as better academic performance, sense of belongingness through community engagement, and development of leadership skills. The purpose of this research was to explore the factors which caused the former members of the collegiate female Taekwondo varsity athletes to dropout from their sports. It is important to explore the reasons for dropout, and know the insights of experiences in Taekwondo varsity training. One-to-one online interviews were used to collect data from the three former members of the collegiate female Taekwondo varsity athletes who dropped out from their Taekwondo varsity team.

Using the Self-determination Theory introduced by Ryan and Deci (2000), the study determined that the weakened inherent psychological need that caused the former members of the collegiate female Taekwondo varsity athletes to dropout from their sports, and experienced extreme struggles in training. The results showed multiple themes such as work and academic priority which are the factors that caused the participant to dropout, and physical and psychological challenges which were faced by the participants during the varsity training. With the results of the qualitative research study, it aims to add knowledge to the collegiate female Taekwondo varsity athletes who have common variables as the participants of the study, as well as the coaches of its team in order for them to be aware that some athletes struggle. It will allow improvements towards coach-athlete relationships, training systems for the overall health and well-being of the collegiate female Taekwondo varsity athletes.
