Resource Title The management of overuse injuries of cheerleaders: a case study
Date Issued January 2024
Abstract Overuse injury is common among athletes performing various repetitive movements such as lifting, swinging, catching & throwing; much like in the sport of cheerleading. However, compared to other sports such as tennis wherein a significant number of injuries are documented, including ones related to overuse (Valleser & Narvasa, 2017), studies on cheer related injuries, especially in the Philippines, are scarce. Thus, this research used a qualitative case study design to discuss the management of overuse injuries among cheerleaders of a state university in Metro Manila. Three participants were then recruited with each one representing a batch year. Through an interview, data was extracted from the responses and using a thematic analysis, the researcher generated themes and sub-themes. The results revealed a significant shortcoming in the team's approach as there is no well–established system to address overuse injuries. Currently, the only identified preventive measure revolves around strength and conditioning. Several factors emerged as influential in shaping the approach of cheerleaders toward managing injuries. Four main themes were developed to summarize and categorize these factors: 1) Nature of Sport, 2) Knowledge and Awareness, 3) Recovery and 4) Management of Injuries. In conclusion, it was found that the cheerleading team’s current overuse injury management system lacks an established and systematic procedure for preventing and treating overuse injuries among the squad members.
