Resource Title Perceived effectiveness of journaling and meditation for prevention of anxiety and depression in female collegiate student-athletes at the University of the Philippines Diliman
Date Issued January 2024
Abstract The female collegiate student-athletes at the University of the Philippines Diliman, facing extensive pressures within personal, academic, and social realms, are at an elevated risk of experiencing anxiety and depression, as posited by the Diathesis-Stress Model. If not addressed, these stressors may lead to a reduced quality of life and an increased likelihood of concurrent disabilities and physical illnesses that can adversely affect overall functionality and performance.

This study, aligned with the Preventive Intervention Framework, proactively aims to test the effectiveness of journaling and meditation, in managing stress and reducing the risk of severe anxiety and depression among female collegiate student-athletes. Employing a randomized-controlled trial design and a mixed-method approach, to thoroughly assess the intervention outcomes. Its objective extends beyond fostering long-term mental wellness and performance improvement; it also seeks to utilize Psychological Skills Training (PST) techniques as an effective method of intrapersonal communication to address mental health concerns related to stress.

The findings suggest that stressors underscore the interrelated nature of academic, athletic, personal, work, and social environments. The comparison of stress reduction outcomes between journaling and meditation as methods of Psychological Skills Training (PST) reveals no statistically significant difference, highlighting the potential influence of contextual nuances and individual variability on their effectiveness. Ultimately, the self-administered stress management techniques employed result in a significant reduction in stress levels.
