| Resource Title | Making yoga accessible for all: a qualitative study on adaptive practices in teaching yoga |
| Date Issued | January 2024 |
| Abstract | Yoga is a discipline that was designed to create balance in the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of an individual. Various populations engage in the practice and receive numerous benefits to their overall well-being. However, it is evident in the literature regarding the perceptions of yoga among different populations that there are misconceptions about yoga. Additionally, studies also show that not everyone is knowledgeable about the adaptive practices being employed to accommodate the individual needs of diverse populations. Hence, many are reluctant to participate in yoga due to misconceptions surrounding the discipline. Therefore, the study aims to explore and learn from the experiences of yoga teachers in their adaptive practices when teaching diverse populations. This includes the adaptive practices they make, perceptions of yoga, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers. In doing so, the study will be able to contribute to a growing body of research that tackles adaptive practices through modification and adaptation in yoga to make it suitable for diverse populations. The study follows a qualitative approach with a descriptive, phenomenological design. There are 5 participants, all of whom are yoga teachers who have experience in adapting yoga sessions for diverse populations. Semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted and transcribed. The gathered data was analyzed through thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the study: (1) perceptions of yoga among yoga teachers, (2) adaptive practices in yoga, (3) perceived benefits of yoga to their students, and (4) perceived barriers. The study concluded that various adaptive practices can be done by yoga teachers to accommodate the needs of diverse populations, and to allow them to experience the benefits of yoga. Further, the adaptive practices the yoga teachers do are rooted in the perception that yoga is for everyone. |
