Resource Title The intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of collegiate cheerleaders to return to sport post injury rehabilitation
Date Issued January 2024
Abstract Cheerleading has experienced a surge in popularity, leading to an increased number of athletes at risk of injuries (Yau et al., 2018). While physiological aspects of injuries are often the focus, the psychological impacts on injured athletes are frequently overlooked. This study delved into the psychological aspects of injured cheerleaders' successful return to sport, focusing on their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations during the rehabilitation process. The study is limited to coed college cheerleaders from University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)schools between the ages of 18 to 25 years old who have experienced an injury with a grade of 2 or higher and have successfully returned to sport within the past year (September 2022 - September 2023). Semi-structured interviews were employed as the primary data collection method. Thematic analysis was used to explore the narratives of the participants, leading to the identification of key themes related to their motivations and successful return to sport. The results of the study highlighted the dynamic nature of motivation, revealing the evolving interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations throughout the rehabilitation process. Furthermore, in the end, it was revealed that intrinsic motivation was perceived to have a stronger impact on the rehabilitation process of the injured cheerleaders.
