| Abstract | This qualitative research examined how news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho spectacularizes the personal narratives of Filipino basketball players as a means of complicating contemporary Filipino identity. Using Guy Debord’s theory of the Spectacle, the researcher conducted an ideological analysis and diagnostic critique on selected episode segments. The basketball players in KMJS were initially portrayed as underdogs and misfits who eventually transform into a heroic icon or the star––the personification of the spectacle that displays an attractive lifestyle and obscures the inequalities of real life. The rendering of the subjects reflected the five key parameters of spectacularization derived from Douglas Kellner’s work: transformation into a star/icon, personification of market logic, production of a fantasy life, communalization of identity, and a depoliticizing force. Furthermore, the spectacularized representations of the subjects have reinforced Filipino values within the segments: family-orientedness, diskarte or resilience and resourcefulness, religiosity, humility and reverence, and the belief in predestined success. However, the study reveals that these values were not forwarded with the intent of cultivating a strong sense of national identity, but to forward a fantasy life where such values function as tools of pacification that dissuade resistance against existing social structures. |
