Resource Title And we’re live (streaming): a comparative analysis of digital and televised primetime newscasts from major Philippine broadcast networks
Date Issued 12 June 2024
Abstract Live streaming has challenged television’s status as Filipinos’ main platform for news. Amid the digital shift, this study investigated how news presentation in primetime television newscasts in the Philippines has been affected by the growing need to adhere to the nuances of online live streaming. Using an integrated model of Hoff and Scheele’s new medium theory (2014) and Albalawi and Sixsmith’s social media agenda-setting theory (2015), this study assessed how the digital medium influenced news content and challenged existing norms in television news production. Comparative content analysis was performed on the primetime news programs of ABS-CBN, GMA, and TV5 with 24 episodes each from 2019 and 2021. Interviews were also conducted with the executive producers of the programs. Findings showed that newscasts were reformatted to retain audience attention through more substantiated stories, integration of topics and language from the online space, and constant engagement of the audiovisual senses. News organizations’ move to live streaming fitted into larger sustainability strategies amid shifts in audience viewing habits. Overall, this endeavor contributes to more widespread efforts to understand the continued digital adaptation of Philippine newsrooms amid changing consumption patterns and media landscapes.
