Date Issued | 17 June 2024 |
Abstract | This study analyzed the lived experiences of fans of the love team DonBelle (Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano) contextualized during the COVID-19 pandemic and ABS-CBN shutdown. Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano debuted as a love team in 2021 in the show He’s Into Her and have seen success in the entertainment industry with the support of their fans despite these challenges. Using a phenomenological research design, the study looked at the experiences and participation of fans with viewing the love team’s show. The data was gathered by conducting four individual semi-structured phenomenological interviews. By utilizing concepts of participatory culture rooted in the encoding and decoding theory, the study was able to discover the fans’ experience, highlighting the changes that new media have made to a person’s viewing experience, practices, and consumption of media. Through a thematic analysis, it is found that the participants had different experiences of the phenomenon. The pandemic and ABS-CBN shut down served as the catalyst to watch He's Into Her, combining the shift to digital media with the participants' need for relief from the difficult situation. Aside from the societal context, it is also apparent in the study that personal context is relevant in the interpretation and meaning-making of the experience. All participants joined the fandom afterwards, and it is found that there are different levels of participation exhibited by each, as well as a profound impact on their individual lives. In sum, the study contributes to the growing knowledge of participatory culture, fan culture, media consumption during times of crisis, and love teams in the Philippines. |
