Resource Title Motivations behind AI adoption in Philippine print newsrooms
Date Issued 18 July 2024
Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a relatively novel concept in Philippine journalism. With the rise of AI-powered applications like ChatGPT, Quillbot, Google Reverse Image Search, Grammarly, and other AI systems in journalism, Philippine print newsrooms may possibly have a new lifeline that would keep their business running for longer. Thus, there is a need to identify AI’s role in Philippine print newsrooms as well as journalists’ motivations in adapting or forgoing the use of the tool. The research aimed to answer the question, “How do newsrooms decide what AI tools to use and how is AI being used in newsrooms in the Philippines?” The researchers adopted the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) Framework, formulated by Tornatzky & Fleischer (1990), which lists down the possible factors why an organization would decide to adopt new technologies. Publicly available data about AI and the Philippine newsrooms were reviewed, and in-depth interviews with 13 print journalists from 10 newsrooms were conducted. A thematic analysis revealed that in line with the TOE framework, newsrooms consider the following when adopting AI: firm technological capacity, perceived technological benefits, AI’s complexity, existing organizational structure, allotted time for staff to complete a task, surplus or deficit of newsroom staff, and competition.
