Date Issued 19 June 2024
Abstract This study conducted a comparative content analysis of SONA coverage by mainstream media, such as inquirer.net and PhilStar.com, and state-owned media, such as PTV and PNA, in the Philippines. Focusing on the second SONA speeches of Presidents Marcos Jr., Duterte, and Aquino, 122 articles were analyzed for topic selection, framing, and objectivity scores. The analysis revealed significant differences in how mainstream and state-owned media frame, report, and cover SONA. Mainstream media demonstrated higher scores in balanced reporting and source attribution, while state-owned media showed consistency in factual information but lower balanced reporting. The framing analysis highlighted the prominence of the responsibility frame across all media, with mainstream outlets incorporating a broader range of frames and critical analysis. The treatment of articles varied, with state-owned media mainly using positive treatments. The study concluded that mainstream media provides more balanced and comprehensive coverage, focusing on evaluating speech content, whereas state-owned media emphasizes government achievements and projections. These findings also suggest that while both types of media maintain high factual accuracy, their framing and objectivity differ, impacting political discourse.
