Abstract | "Drag Den with Manila Luzon" is the first locally produced drag reality pageant show in the Philippines, offering a platform to explore the presentation of the Filipino bakla identity. Utilizing Dougherty et al.'s Language Convergence/Meaning Divergence Theory, J. Neil Garcia's Philippine Gay Culture, McHarge's Reality TV Conventions on Drag Race, and Schrøder's Multi-Dimensional Model of Mass Media Reception, the research employed a three-pronged analysis focused on the show's production process, content, and audience's reception. Through a textual analysis of all of Drag Den Season 2 episodes and audience reception, along with interviews with the producers, casts, and participants, the study revealed both convergences and divergences in the presentation and reception of the Filipino bakla identity. Notably, all three aspects demonstrate a shared objective concerning the visuals and technicalities of the show. However, the study also highlights gaps in the deeper cultural and personal narratives, reflecting the complex dynamics between the show's intentions and the viewer's reception. |
