| Resource Title | A content analysis of news framing of Philstar.com, Inquirer.net, and Spin.ph for the coverage of Gilas Pilipinas National Men’s Basketball Team from 2021-2023 |
| Date Issued | 23 June 2024 |
| Abstract | This study analyzed the similarities and differences of three online news platforms on their coverage of Gilas Pilipinas-related news from 2021-2023 through their use of sports journalism-specific news frames (character frame and performance frame) and adherence to the Accountable Sports Journalism Code. Using the framing theory developed by De Vreese (2000), a content analysis was conducted on a total of 1,227 articles published by Philstar.com, Inquirer.net and Spin.ph. An interview was also conducted with a sports section editor and a sports writer from each of the three news platforms. The study reveals that Philstar.com prefers straight news reports or long-form reports as they value quality over quantity, Inquirer.net employs bit-by-bit reporting in order to create multiple short-form articles for more online engagement, and Spin.ph puts more focus on fan reactions to Gilas Pilipinas-related news. Results showed that all three news platforms had predominantly positively-toned articles, all three favored the character frame over the performance frame, and all three had an average score of 6 out 10 ethical guidelines present in the articles. |
