Resource Title Through women's eyes: media coverage disparity in UAAP men's and women's team sports according to UP Diliman's female athletes
Date Issued 24 June 2024
Abstract This study delves into the perceptions of UAAP female athletes from the University of the Philippines - Diliman regarding the marked differences in media coverage between men’s and women’s team sporting events, particularly in basketball, football, and softball during UAAP season 85. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in Phenomenology Theory, the research aims to uncover the nuances of media coverage disparities faced by female athletes in the UAAP context. The study utilizes the framing theory's three distinct stages, which are composed of the framing building, framing setting, and levels of consequences conceived at individual and/or societal levels ( D’Angelo, 2002; Scheufele, 2000).

The findings reveal a shared sentiment among female athletes, highlighting the need for improved media representation to showcase their skills and achievements. The unequal coverage is perceived as unjust and discouraging, impacting the athletes' confidence levels. Furthermore, the study reveals how such contrasting coverage perpetuates gender biases and disparities, influencing the societal perception of female athletes. Despite efforts from various members of the community to bridge the gap, frustration persists among athletes and supporters alike. The study advocates for equal media coverage, including live broadcasts, interviews, and social media engagement, as a means to promote recognition, inspire future generations, and attract sponsorships for female athletes. It calls upon media outlets to recognize and take measures against the underrepresentation of female athletes, thereby believing their significant contributions to the sporting landscape.
