| Resource Title | “Kamusta, mga inaanak?”: an audience study on Ninong Ry’s fans and their understanding of masculinity |
| Date Issued | 24 June 2024 |
| Abstract | This thesis examines the connection between Ninong Ry’s audience, cooking, and masculinity in a Filipino setting. It specifically seeks to answer how Ninong Ry’s audience understands the concept of masculinity through his videos. The study used Schrøder’s Model to provide an in-depth picture of the reception of Ninong Ry’s audience, with Connell’s Hegemonic Masculinity being the lens used to examine his audience’s insights. The researchers conducted eight in-depth interviews with fans of Ninong Ry of different genders, ages, and backgrounds, and they found the participants’ understanding of Ninong Ry’s masculinity to both reinforce and contradict hegemonic masculinity due to characteristics of his that are traditionally considered to be either masculine or feminine. While Ninong Ry's expression of masculinity has not personally affected the participants' views on what qualifies as masculine, their insights explained that he challenges stereotypical masculinity through his generosity, kindness, talkative nature, and other traits of his that do not fit the typical male mold. Having such representation of masculinity in the media through influencers like Ninong Ry can alter what audiences and consumers view as masculine, and open doors for other types of masculinity to gain more representation. |
