| Abstract | This study analyzes the rhetorical practices, embodied acts, and technological strategies of select Filipino queer content creators, specifically Sassa Gurl, Queen Dura, and Pipay, as they perform and construct the baklang kanal identity on the social media platform TikTok. The analysis uses such concepts as Queer Rhetoric by Jonathan Alexander and Jacqueline Rhodes (2017), Queer Performativity by Tomasso Milani (2019), and Digital Spaces by Niels van Doorn (2011). It makes the argument that the construction of the baklang kanal identity on TikTok is multifaceted and dynamic. The strategic use of rhetorical appeals challenges societal norms and stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality. The queering of performativity through affect, embodiment, and materiality contribute to the richness and diversity of representations of the baklang kanal identity. Furthermore, leveraging digital tools, such as filters, virtual backgrounds, and visual effects highlights the transformative potential of digital platforms, specifically TikTok, in shaping and amplifying diverse expressions of the baklang kanal identity. The implications of this study extend to various domains, including rhetoric and performance studies, representation, disruption of social norms, and media influence. By shedding light on the rhetorical, performative, and technological dimensions of digital queer identities on TikTok, specifically the baklang kanal, this research facilitates further explorations into the complexities of LGBTQ+ expression in digital spaces. |
