Resource Title Call me mother : analyzing the relational dynamics of Filipino drag mother and drag daughter relationship through symbolic interactionism
Date Issued 24 June 2024
Abstract Within the drag community and culture in the Philippines, the existence of drag houses are gradually surfacing and being a visible phenomenon that calls for an analysis of how Filipino drag queens create queer spaces of belonging to take up space and expand the definitions of drag and family. Having a series of pakikipag-kwentuhan with five Filipino drag families in Greater Manila, this thesis foregrounds their lived experiences and stories of being drag mothers and drag daughters. Together they socially interact and treat each other as a family. Through the lenses of Relational Dynamics and Symbolic Interactionism, this study analyzes the dynamics of Filipino drag houses by first describing the social identities, roles, and symbolic interactions between Filipino drag mothers and drag daughters. Findings reveal that drag mothers serve as mentors, nurturers, role models, and critics, concurrently drag daughters act as mentees, representatives, and assistants. Meanwhile their symbolic interactions include sharing of resources, celebrating special moments together, assisting in drag performances, performing together as a drag house, ‘clocking,’ doing housework, and using familial endearments such as Mama and Anak. From these shared identities and experiences, it further establishes the significant relational dynamics present within their relationship which includes power, emotional, and communication dynamics. This reflects the collective pursuit of Filipino drag queens to intentionally form complex and multifaceted bonds that resemble a familial relationship. Thus, ultimately reveals that Filipinos have the capacity for inclusivity, adaptation, and acceptance towards families that are built by the often marginalized queer individuals and communities.
