Resource Title When she’s raging, watch closely: Fan Girl (2020) film spectatorship analysis on Letterboxd countering gendered disinformation
Date Issued 21 June 2024
Abstract This film study is a manifestation of the collective rage of spectators and the researcher against gender-based violence and disinformation. Focusing on the community of Antoinette Jadaone’s Fan Girl (2020) on Letterboxd, it argues that online film spectatorship can activate collective action against gender-based violence and disinformation through the acknowledgment of babaeng nanlaban. The study employs bell hooks’ Intersectional Feminism (1995), Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory (1973), and Ochs & Capps’ Narrating the Self theory (1996). By analyzing spectators’ anecdotes and discourses on blind fanaticism and gender-based violence during Duterte’s administration, combined with their repressed personal pain and narratives, it reveals that there are diverse and critical voices on Letterboxd, with women empowered to confront their abusers by sharing their experiences. It highlights the importance of babaeng nanlaban films and online film platforms in fostering a collective understanding of women’s rage as a powerful force against systemic patriarchal violence. Significantly, it has proven that women’s rage is a valid site of empowerment and resistance, rather than a sign of irrationality, debunking the disinformation against it.
