Resource Title From classrooms to newsrooms: a comparative study on the lived experiences of former Tinig ng Plaridel staffers and UP journalism scholars in media
Date Issued 26 June 2024
Abstract This study explores the lived experiences of former Tinig ng Plaridel (TNP) staffers and non-TNP journalism scholars who pursued their respective posts in media after college. Anchored with the theory on experiential learning of journalism theory and practice by Greenberg (2014), this study compares how the former UP journalism scholars—those who served in their student publication and those who opted out of school paper—navigated their way of learning in the journalism school, their application of journalism theories into practice, up to their employment and profession in the industry. Research participants were randomly chosen from the classes of 2019 to 2023. Employing a qualitative method, data were gathered from in-depth interviews and were synthesized using a phenomenological research design. Results found that both school paper experience and in-class journalism learning equipped these media practitioners with adequate skills and knowledge in the discipline. Although there were no significant differences found in their employability and professional practice, former school publication members attributed their journalistic learning to newsroom work dynamics in TNP, while non-campus journalists got more inclined to fundamental principles and legwork procedures taught in the journalism program.
