Resource Title The prevalence of the relative age effect among Philippine female professional volleyball players: a retrospective study
Date Issued 17 June 2024
Abstract This thesis explored the Relative Age Effect (RAE) among Philippine professional volleyball players, examining whether athletes born earlier in the year have competitive advantages over those born later. The study involved 111 players from the Premier Volleyball League, encompassing data analysis using Chi-Square Goodness-of-Fit tests. The researcher analyzed birth quarter distribution, award counts during adolescence, and career longevity, the research revealed significant relationships between RAE and both individual achievements and career duration, thus showing prevalence among Philippine female professional volleyball players.

The findings indicated that there are more respondents in quarters 3 and 4, the quarters are dependent on the awards, with quarter 1 and quarter 3 exceeding the expected, athletes born in the first quarter of the year are more likely to attain greater success, while those born on the third sustain longer careers. Recommendations include adjusting youth recruitment criteria to ensure fair competition, enhancing participant recruitment strategies, and expanding future research to include larger, more diverse samples and additional seasons for longitudinal analysis.
