Resource Title | Motivation of Filipino parents to enroll their child in karate |
Date Issued | June 2024 |
Abstract | Karate, as a form of martial arts, can be considered an activity for improving the mind and body. While there is research that examines the motives of martial artists, research that focuses on parents' motives to enroll their children in martial arts is scant. This study aimed to determine parents' motives for enrolling their children in karate. A modified survey questionnaire from the study of Pracht et al. (2020) was used. Sixty (60) participants from selected dojos around the National Capital Region (NCR) were able to answer. The study found the leading motive for enrollment was towards the social benefits and character development of the child. However, there was no significant difference in having a previous background during childhood/adolescence of a parent in any activity/sport/martial art in influencing the motivation of parents to enroll their child in karate. The qualitative part of the questionnaire has determined that character development can also be seen as parents' primary motivation in enrolling their children in karate. This study offers insights into Filipino parents' motivations for enrolling their children in Shotokan karate. It highlights how karate is believed to promote an active lifestyle among the youth in the Philippines and contributes to the limited research on this topic in the country. |
