Resource Title The motivation of Filipino volunteers in the FIBA basketball world cup 2023
Date Issued 11 June 2024
Abstract Volunteerism is the act of providing service without the expectation of receiving rewards of any kind (Cuskelly, 2021). Given the non-compulsory nature of this service, volunteer needs are often overlooked which results in high attrition rates (Barcelona, Wells, & Arthur-Banning, 2016). Hence, aligning motivation with volunteer management is significant in reducing risks of poor participation (Wang & Wu, 2014). In contrast, despite several issues in volunteer management in sports events held in the Philippines, many volunteers were persistent in providing their services that resulted in lower attrition rates than expected. To determine the influence of motivation in participation, the study used a survey adapted from the Volunteer Motivation Scale for International Sporting Events (VMS-ISE) applied in the study of Wang and Wu, 2014. To identify dominating variables of motivation and to categorize these in relation to their participation a quantitative content analysis research design was used. Since the study also aims to identify common motivational variables among Filipinos, the participants were limited to Filipinos with experiences specifically in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 wherein the Philippines was among the host countries.
