Date Issued | 03 July 2024 |
Abstract | The rise of social media has enabled millions of users to consume and create various types of media every day. It provided celebrities with an opportunity to stay connected with their fans, curate their public image, and has paved the way for the emergence of new celebrities. This opportunity to become a celebrity is no longer gatekept by large media industries, as social media serves as a platform where ordinary individuals can gain popularity. However, some individuals gain popularity not solely through their own efforts but also through independent users on social media creating content about them, as seen with overseas Filipino basketball players. Hence, this study examines how Filipino content creators depict overseas Filipino basketball players as celebrities in their Facebook content. This study is guided by Matusitz and Simi’s (2021) Celebrity Manufacture Theory which was also supported by Lin et al.’s (2014) concept of sensationalism and Moulard et al.’s (2015) concept of authenticity for celebrities. Through the utilization of textual analysis on 14 videos about the overseas Filipino basketball players, this study reveals that the content creators are able to manufacture the athletes as celebrities through highlighting violence, capitalizing on Filipino pride, and using NBA players as standard. The athletes were also portrayed as Excellent Stars, Special Stars, and Relatable Stars. Findings show that the content creators are able to create individuals worth following through portrayal and construction of narratives. |
