| Abstract | In a Covid-19 pandemic sitcom, Jolo's family struggle against corrupted systematic forces amidst their comedic everyday lives. The arrest of Jolo's brother results in a series of hurdles, having to obtain bail money and to deal with the apathetic police. Smiles all around and hopeful, their successful obtainment of the required bail money is negated by the death of Albie. Jolo, disillusioned, finds himself in a world opposite his prior reality; this one filled with senseless tragedy and drama. And yet, the illusions seem to have not yet completely dissipated. Bubble Bang exposes the potentially problematic presentation of reality by varied media through the use of Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotic Film Theory and the Formalist Film Theory. The film’s iconic signification of certain media such as sitcoms and narrative films is an attempt to display the ways in which such forms are harmful to the audiences as they tend to distort reality, whether by watering down the gravity of societal issues or by overexaggerating them without sufficient world-building and deep exploration of such issues while backed by extensive research. At the same time, the film relies on the mimicry of said media forms. |
