| Abstract | This study explores the relationship between coach-created motivational climate and the motivation of non-starter student-athletes in a State University setting. The study employed the Empowering and Disempowering Motivational Climate Questionnaire-Coach (EDMCQ-C) and the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) to assess the perceived motivational climate and various motivation types (intrinsic, extrinsic, amotivation) among 49 non-starter athletes using a quantitative descriptive design. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between an autonomy-supportive coaching style and intrinsic motivation, particularly the desire to gain knowledge. Additionally, a strong positive relationship exists between task involvement and intrinsic motivation to know, while a moderate, inverse relationship is revealed between amotivation. A moderate relationship was found between social support and all two types of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and a very strong relationship between IM-to know. However, no significant correlations were observed between external regulation and any of the five key aspects of the coach-created motivational climate. The study recommends further research exploring the impact of different factors, including managerial decisions, on the motivational climate and motivation of non-starters in a broader context. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the motivational needs of non-starter athletes and have implications for coaches and sports program coordinators who aim to enhance the performance of... |
