Resource Title Dealing with neurodivergence: a mixed methods study on the online information-seeking behaviors of Filipino parents and parental acceptance towards autism spectrum disorder
Date Issued 4 July 2024
Abstract In the Philippines, more than 130,000 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), an under-examined neurodevelopmental disorder marked by developmental delays imposed on one’s ability to socialize, learn, and behave. All these factors fundamentally contribute to the suboptimal awareness about ASD and prejudice that obscure social and parental acceptance of Filipino parents. However, with the presence of health information on the internet, parents may ease these circumstances by gaining informational and emotional support from various sources while encountering challenges related to parenting, local access to professional sources and services, disadvantaged sociodemographic characteristics, and the complex nature of ASD.

Anchored on Fisher et al.’s (2006) expanded Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (IMB) Model, this study investigated the relationships between and among parental ASD-related knowledge, acceptance, online social support, eHealth literacy, information-related behavior, and information-related behavioral outcomes. Using a mixed-methods approach, the input of 235 survey respondents and 10 informants were analyzed to investigate the interlinkages of the IMB variables and how they manifest in the lived experiences of Filipino parents. Data was analyzed using correlation and thematic analyses. The results show that the relationship between and among ASD-related knowledge, acceptance, online social support, eHealth literacy, information-related behavior, and information-related behavioral outcomes manifest complex associations under the premise of parenthood, social media source primacy, and desired experiential information.
