Resource Title A comparison of the collegiate GWA between continuing student-athletes, non-continuing student-athletes, and non-athletes
Date Issued 17 June 2024
Abstract This study aimed to investigate the impact of athletic performance on students' academic performance during their college years, following their prior engagement in athletics. The methodology utilized a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests to compare the effects of continuous athletic participation (Collegiate Varsity Athletes), non-continuous athletic participation (Former High School Varsity Athletes), and non-athletes based on the general weighted average (GWA) of the three groups. The research explored the comparison between sports participation and academic achievement among a randomly selected sample of collegiate students with varying levels of athletic participation. Academic achievement was assessed based on the student's overall general weighted average (GWA) during their first two semesters or first year at the university. A total of 56 college students (34 Males, 22 Females) participated in the study, of which 25, 16, and 15 were categorized as collegiate varsity athletes, former high school varsity athletes, and nonathletes, respectively. College students who were former high school varsity athletes (n=16, 1.49) had a higher overall General Weighted Average (GWA) when compared to collegiate varsity athletes (n=25, 1.80) and nonathletes (n=15, 1.65). A significant difference was found between continuing student-athletes and non-continuing student-athletes. On the other hand, no significant difference was found among continuing student-athletes and non-athletes. There was also no significant difference between the first-year GWAs of collegiate students based on gender.
