Date Issued | 4 June 2024 |
Abstract | In the realm of digital education, online physical education (OLPE) stands out due to its potential to prompt physical activity responses from learners when effectively implemented. However, achieving certain goals of physical education, such as physical and social development, cognitive improvement, inclusivity, safety awareness, and lifelong skills, can be challenging online, even with accessible technology. Due to the pandemic, teachers had to adapt hastily when classes had to shift to full online settings. Consequently, OLPE faces unique hurdles, balancing traditional standards with digital constraints. This study explores the changes in teaching Physical Education before and during the pandemic, focusing on unveiling the teaching methodologies, student engagement, and challenges in OLPE that hinder achieving the objectives of physical education. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design utilizing semi-structured interviews. Participants in this study consisted of 12 senior high school Physical Education teachers with ages ranging from 26 to X years and who were recruited through snowball sampling. Seven of the participants taught in private schools and five in public schools. Qualitative data from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this study are organized into five major themes: (1) teaching methodologies in physical education, (2) assessment in physical education, (3) student engagement in OLPE, (4) challenges in OLPE, and (5) strategies used to address these challenges in OLPE. This study concludes that ongoing innovation and collaboration were crucial in adapting to evolving educational landscapes of learning modalities. PE teachers demonstrated proactive measures and an empathetic approach toward their students' situations and well-being by going beyond the demands of their work and bridging the gap between teachers and students. |
