Resource Title A correlational study on mental toughness and psychological injury response of injured college athletes
Date Issued 15 June 2024
Abstract Mental toughness is known as a psychological characteristic that aids athletes to bring out consistent high levels of performance and keep a goal-directed behavior, despite the challenges and stressors they face (Bird et al., 2021). It may influence an athlete’s psychological response towards their injury. Having traits such as hardiness and optimism drives athletes to have a positive outlook and stay focused on their goals despite the challenges that they may face. This study explored the relationship between the levels of mental toughness and an athlete’s psychological response to their sport injury. To answer this question, the researcher used two standardized questionnaires and had the respondents complete them. Respondents were chosen out of a university using the convenience sampling method to gather injured student-athletes. Data gathered using the questionnaire was then analyzed using the Pearson's Correlation Coefficient to determine the degree of association between the two variables. After conducting the Pearson’s correlation coefficient, two significant correlations were found between the subscales of the PRSII and the SMTQ. The subscales Restlessness and Constancy (r = -.40, p-value = .03) and the subscales Reorganization and Confidence (r = -.42, p-value = .02) both have moderate and negative correlations. Most respondents did not react negatively to getting injured. This was because of their mental toughness which had an inverse relationship with the negative psychological responses towards an injury. Mental toughness at certain aspects may contribute to reducing bitter and negative psychological responses due to its coping strategies such as hardiness and optimism.
