Date Issued 27 June 2024
Abstract Motivation is an important factor in an athlete's journey, not only towards success but also to being fulfilled and content in their chosen sport. Motivation drives athletes to perform at the highest level and pushes them to learn and improve their skills, techniques, tactics, physique, and helps them cope with the pressures and demands of competitive sports. Without the proper motivation, athletes will not only be unable to fulfill their potential, they may succumb to pressure and play for the wrong reasons, which is unhealthy in the long run. This study identified the motivations of male and female football players, as student-athletes. The researcher used a standardized questionnaire to gather data from the respondents. The participants were chosen from a collegiate varsity football team using the convenience sampling method. The data gathered from the questionnaire was analyzed through descriptive statistics. Excel tallied the answers of the male and female collegiate student-athletes to determine their motivation and found them motivated by: integrated regulation for males and identified regulation for females. A t-test, with a level of significance at 0.05 (p < 0.05) and an effect size analysis using Cohen’s d, was then calculated and observed a single significant difference between the two groups in the integrated subscale (p = 0.019), with a medium effect size (d = 0.624). Participants were found to be extrinsically motivated and did not differ greatly in what motivated them, between genders, except for a single factor: the integrated regulation.
