Abstract The media’s historical sidelining of disability sports has perpetuated myths on disabilities and blocked para-athletes from visibility and proper representation, thus limiting the opportunities and support for them. This thesis sought to analyze the representation of disability sports during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games in Philippine online news articles. Using qualitative content analysis, specifically interpretive textual analysis, this study examined how established local news outlets were representing disability sports. The findings from 24 articles showed that there was a high emphasis on performance metrics with a limited number of personal narratives about para-athletes. Most articles conveyed a positive, celebratory tone towards para-athletes' achievements and featured them without highlighting their disabilities. Additionally, 9 articles used direct quotes from the para-athletes, spotlighting their voices. However, the fact that Filipinos paid little attention to Filipino para-athletes until right before the games suggested societal neglect of these kinds of sports events in the country until then. It is noteworthy that very little attention was directed towards the medical facets of disabilities. With this, there is still a need for more balanced representation including personal narratives and addressing broader societal barriers. Such an approach is pivotal in fostering understanding and advancing a socially inclusive model of disability.
