Resource Title Exploring identity formation and communication of Filipino gamers in multiplayer online gaming environment
Date Issued 10 July 2024
Abstract Filipino gamers have long forged their identity within the gaming community, reflective of the country's vibrant, passionate, and competitive gaming culture. However, the existence of the Peenoise label undermines this identity and puts Filipino gamers in a negative light, characterizing them as noisy and toxic players. This thesis employed the integration of Video Game Interaction Model and Communication Theory of Identity, as well as developed indicators of Peenoise behavior, to explore how Filipino gamers develop and communicate their identity in multiplayer online games. Interviews were conducted with 15 Filipino gamers, aged 20 to 32, who played Valorant. Findings show that the video game interaction of Filipino gamers is indicative of their identity exploration and expression. Multilayered identities emerged through participants’ experiences of assimilating their offline personalities into their player profiles, building relationships with other players in-game or playing with established friend groups, encountering and dealing with toxic players, and seeing themselves as part of the Filipino gaming community. The participants’ narratives of gaming experiences affirm the indicators of Peenoise behavior, while some distanced themselves from the said label. The Peenoise identity was perceived to only apply to Filipino gamers who exhibit toxic behavior.
