| Date Issued | June 2024 |
| Abstract | While participation motivation is a well-established research area in martial arts and sports psychology, there remains a gap in the literature concerning participation motivation in Arnis. This study seeked to fill this gap by examining the motivational differences among Filipino Arnisadors. A descriptive-comparative approach was employed as the research design of this study. The final participants of the study were one hundred fifty-six (n = 156) Filipino Arnisadors aged 18-59 years old with varying levels of experience from different parts of the Philippines. An adapted version of the Physical Activity and Leisure Motivation Scale (PALMS) was used to collect information about the participants’ motives. Findings show that Enjoyment, Mastery, and Physical Condition are the most salient participation motives in Arnis followed by Psychological Condition. The third top reasons were Appearance and Affiliation while the least influential motives were Competition/Ego and Others' Expectations. There were no significant differences found in the participation motives between male and female Filipino Arnisadors. On the other hand, significant differences were found in the Psychological Condition motivation of Young Adults (18-35 years) and Middle Age participants (36-59 years), with Young Adult Arnisadors endorsing Psychological Condition more than Middle-Aged Arnisadors. Lastly, no relationship was found between motivation and experience level among those who have been engaging in Arnis for less than 5 years and those who have been training for 5 years or more. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing the Arnis experience for Filipinos and attracting future participants to join the community. |
