Resource Title Updating the physical fitness test of Philippine Coast Guard fleet units afloat: a pilot project on a PCG-manned vessel
Date Issued 6 May 2024
Abstract The previous and incumbent Physical Fitness Test (PFT) practiced by the personnel Philippine Coast Guard has not been updated since 1898. Thus, this study aims to develop a an up-to-date, data-driven, and functional Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to Philippine Coast Guard Fleet Units Afloat by testing A Pilot Project on a PCG Manned Vessel. Thus, a pilot project of testing this PFT was done to the afloat unit of a PCG-manned vessel. The PFT was taken by 10 personnel of the vessel. The objective is to ensure that active sailors of the Philippine Coast Guard Fleet are tested using a functional tool that helps them maintain physical readiness and health, contributing to the overall operational efficiency and safety of maritime operations such as heaving mooring lines, throwing life rings, quick reaction with sprinting and climbing to other bigger boats (important when boarding and inspecting other commercial vessels), and maintaining good balance even in rough waters. For this research, there were two pilot tests conducted with the afloat unit that was subjected for the test. The quantitative analysis indicated that there was significant fitness progress and showed that the pilot tests are effective in enhancing the crew’s fitness. Moreover, the qualitative feedback garnered was positive with regards to the test administration, difficulty, and points for improvement. This pilot research will provide important information regarding the benefits of having an updated and newly developed PFT that will help the male sailors of the Philippine Coast Guard Fleet.
