| Abstract | This study aims to explore the experiences of Twitter alter users, especially on how they participate in the alter community. The study focused particularly on the experiences of female alter users because they are an under-researched population of the community. Using a phenomenological approach anchored on Jenkins’ theory of participatory culture, the study aimed to answer the question: What are the lived experiences of Filipina alter users as they participate in the alter community on Twitter? Guided by a phenomenological approach, the study’s data gathering procedure is via semi-structured interviews centered on five Filipina alter users who were selected through purposive sampling. Data that were collected were analyzed through thematic analysis, where similarities and themes were identified from the participants’ answers. From here, the study drew its conclusions and found out that Twitter alter can be considered an online participatory community because of how alter users turned from passive consumers to active producers of content. Findings have also shown how Filipina alter users view alter as a platform for fulfilling the male fantasy and how it reflects the taboo sexual culture in the Philippines. Lastly, the study revealed how the alter community is able to financially sustain its members, highlighting the impact and emerging uses of digital media today. |
