| Abstract | This study examines the experience of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) within regional gaming cultures of the postcolonial global south. Specifically, it describes the experience of Final Fantasy XIV Online (FFXIV) for Filipino gamers. Problematizing the game as a form of globalized media, the study is guided by theories of cultural studies, globalization, and postcolonialism situated in game studies. Informed by the philosophy of postmodern ethnography and the practices of virtual-world ethnography, the study produces a thick description of FFXIV, representing players’ experiences in a narrative synthesis with significant interpretive depth. Within it, the MMORPG is theorized as a medium for the renegotiation of social margins and essentialist notions actualized in the physical world, for those who have the capital necessary to access it. In presenting this narrative, the study contributes a scholarly account of gaming cultures in the Philippines, and a Filipino perspective to the nascent field of regional game studies. Sinusuri ng pananaliksik na ito ang karanasan ng mga globalisadong massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) sa loob ng mga kulturang rehiyonal ng gaming sa mga bansang postkolonyal sa global south. Partikular na inilalarawan ang karanasan ng Final Fantasy XIV Online (FFXIV) para sa mga manlalaro mula sa Pilipinas. Dahil isinaalang-alang dito ang laro bilang isang anyo ng globalisadong media, ginagabayan ito, samakatuwid, ng mga teorya ng cultural studies, globalisasyon, at postkolonyalismo sa larangan ng game studies. Batay sa pilosopiya ng postmodern ethnography at mga pamamaraan ng virtual-world ethnography, nais ilahad ng pag-aaral ang karanasan ng mga manlalarong Filipino sa interpretatibo at reflexive na pamamaraan.
