Resource Title Hey guys, it’s Me!: constructedness of online child influencers within the culture of contemporary stardom
Date Issued 21 January 2024
Abstract Given the emerging trend of child influencers, it is imperative that we understand children’s situation in the digital realm. Rooted in the premise that child influencers are without full autonomy in their digital self-presentation, this study looks into child influencers as constructed personalities engineered via systems of digital curation and celebrification. The exhibitional approach to self-presentation (Hogan, 2010) and the star theory (Dyer, 1979) make up the theoretical groundings for this venture. To illustrate the constructedness of child influencers and its implications about children’s digital media experiences, this study probed into the YouTube persona of Nitch, a local macro-influencer starring in the YouTube channel Nitch & Fam. Textual analysis was conducted on select videos to examine Nitch’s performances and overall exhibition within the nuanced culture of contemporary stardom. By investigating the constructedness of Nitch, the study revealed that various efforts had been made to develop her star image amidst a shared online exhibition. This was key to mapping out new perspectives on children's digital media experiences which further underscored the insufficiency of current efforts to uphold their welfare.
