| Resource Title | Rekindling the spark: localizing the definition of the dating show genre by analyzing the show “sparks camp” (2023) through genre theory |
| Date Issued | 30 January 2024 |
| Abstract | The rise of the boys’ love (BL) genre in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic gives a revival to a seemingly dormant genre on local television– the dating show genre. This study attempted to create a localized definition of the dating show genre by analyzing the show "Sparks Camp" (2023) using Genre Theory. Jane Feuer’s aesthetic, ritual, and ideological approaches, as supported by Daniel Chandler’s generic textual features and Jason Mittell’s cultural approach to genre theory, gave a nuanced understanding of what constitutes the dating show genre. The researcher found that the contemporary dating show genre features narratives that are not scripted but guided by activities that initiate connections, which contributes to the unpredictability of the outcome of the show. It features ordinary people who are looking for potential partners. It is set in an open but controlled environment for the activities and games. It also emphasizes the importance of clear audio recording and close-up framings because there are no retakes allowed. The genre also features the unique use of alcohol to remove inhibitions from the contestants. The dating show genre is localized by reflecting the conservative culture of the Philippine society. It neither features explicit sexual acts during the show nor reinforces the belief in polyamory relationships, in consideration of the dominant Christianism in the country. Particularly on the queer dating show genre, it features members from the LGBTQIA+ community. Aside from romantic themes, it tackles the challenges of queer dating. It demands inclusivity and representation, therefore, in the long run, it should feature different relationship dynamics that challenge the dominant preference for masculine-presenting individuals. Sa pagsikat ng boys’ love genre sa Pilipinas noong kasagsagan ng pandemya ng COVID-19, nabuhay muli ang isang genre na tila hindi na lumago sa telebisyon– ito ang dating show genre.
