Abstract Most universities admit students based on their performance in a qualifying examination. On the other hand, student-athletes, after being recruited, get to study because they represent the school in interscholastic sports. There is still a small part of the student-athlete population who play sport and represent the university in interscholastic sports competitions on top of their studies – even if they are not obligated to train and play as is usually the case for the recruited student-athletes.

This study was about determining and understanding the factors university entrance exam passer athletes, or UPA, considered in joining a team sport. The qualitative method of research was used. Six university entrance exam passer athletes, who were part of a cheerleading team, participated in this study.

Data was collected through an online survey that included the sociodemographic information data regarding the participants. The survey also included a Sports Motivation Scale, or SMS which helped in answering one of the objectives of the study. Half of the participants were also interviewed face-to-face after the collation of the online survey. Based on the SMS, the tally for intrinsic motivation was greater than extrinsic motivation. Reasons why the UPA joined the cheerleading team was because of an ingrained routine during their high school years. And the factors that contributed to their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were the satisfaction and benefits of cheerleading. With this, the paper may help the coaches improve their recruiting strategies with the knowledge they get regarding the motivatio
