Resource Title | Prevalence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) and Urinary Incontinence (UI) in collegiate track and field athletes in Metro Manila |
Date Issued | 24 June 2024 |
Abstract | Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) and Urinary Incontinence (UI) are complications occurring in the urinary tract system that significantly affect an individual’s quality of life. In athletes, these may cause them to modify their training regimen or stop exercising at all. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of LUTS and UI in Collegiate Track and Field Athletes in Metro Manila. Participants of the study were collegiate track and field athletes from the eight (8) schools included in the UAAP who competed during the UAAP 86 Athletics Tournament. A six-section questionnaire was administered to the participants which includes the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-UI Short-Form (ICIQ-UI-SF), ICIQ-MLUTS, and ICIQ-FLUTS, which obtained 38 respondents. This study aimed to determine if the prevalence of LUTS and UI is associated with sex, body mass index (BMI), and track and field event specialization. No significant differences in the prevalence of LUTS and UI were found between sexes with p-values of 0.19 and 0.13, respectively. No significant associations were found between BMI and track and field event specialization and the prevalence of LUTS with p-values of 0.1812 and 0.1543, respectively. Results also showed that BMI has a significant association with the prevalence of UI with a p-value of 0.0152, whereas track and field event specialization does not with a p-value of 0.0752. This study reveals that even young adult athletes experience LUTS and UI regardless of severity and that these urinary conditions affect them in performing household tasks and physical activities in varying degrees of impact. |
