Resource Title A comparative content analysis of Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Manila Times’ reportage of COVID-19 vaccines from January 2021 to December 2021
Date Issued 09 June 2022
Abstract This study analyzes to what extent the reportage of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and The Manila Times were aligned with the research and studies of WHO, DOH, and OCTA on COVID-19 vaccines from January 2021 to December 2021. It also examined if Philippine Daily Inquirer, an independent news outlet, and The Manila Times, a pro-government news outlet, affected each of their health framing communication in light of their individual political leanings. Filipinos have yet to get reeled in from suffering vaccine hesitancy in the country, especially after the Dengvaxia debacle. Taking this into account,
the media’s role becomes crucial as its engagement with the public can shape their perception of the vaccines and vaccination itself. Anchoring on the Agenda-setting theory as the foundation of this research, it was revealed that these two media organizations were not able to completely adhere to the standard guideline of health reporting, however, both media organizations strived to dispel vaccine hesitancy and encouraged the public to get vaccinated. On the other hand, both media organizations showed no bias and political inclinations influencing their health reportage. These results were generated through content analysis by subjecting news reports about the COVID-19 vaccines to a coding sheet specifically constructed for this study.
