| Resource Title | To tweet or not to tweet: exploring twitter rant accounts as a platform for Improved self-expression among Filipino digital natives |
| Date Issued | June 2020 |
| Abstract | This research primarily aims to understand the emerging phenomenon of Twitter rant accounts among Filipino digital natives and determine how its creation provides the user a platform where they can express themselves better. Guided by Erving Goffman’s theory on dramaturgy, this research seeks shed light on users’ motivations in creating the account, the distinct characteristics that sets the rant account apart from a usual Twitter account, and the benefits that the account gives to the user in terms of online self-presentation through in-depth interviews among seven individuals who have two Twitter accounts, the first being their primary account and the other being their rant account. With the use thematic analysis to draw patterns from the data gathered in the interviews, results suggest that the nature of a rant account, which (a) is commonly set to private, (b) make use of names and photos that don’t directly identify with the profile owner, and (c) is only accessible to a small number of users that the users have chosen, provide the user a platform where they can express themselves better because of the ability to articulate their thoughts more, be honest with themselves, and engage with like-minded users in an environment where there is little to no judgment. |
