| Abstract | Ballet training is regarded to be positively influential on several health-related outcomes such as supporting everyday activities, improving the body’s proprioception, rhythm synchronization, and overall physical activity. Despite all these benefits however, there is a growing phenomenon in Filipino ballerinas to shift to a different dance style, sport, or physical activity, even with years of ballet training. The study seeks to identify the reasons why the participants leave ballet, determine the elements that influenced the participants in pursuing other dance style, sport, or physical activity, and assess the factors on the reasons the participants chose their current field. 20 former amateur ballerinas (with ages 20-51 years old) who trained in classical ballet participated in this study. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis and through the interpretative phenomenological approach analysis by Pietkiewicz & Smith (2012). The self-determination theory was used as a guide for interpreting the data. Results showed that former amateur ballerinas left ballet and pursued other dance style, sport, or physical activity because of the following six overarching themes: the toxic environment of ballet, loss of interest, ballet training, perceived physical limitations, college, and the pandemic. The study also delved into the skills that the participants developed from ballet that were useful in their current training, touching on the view of ballet being the foundation of all dance styles and how ballet and the arts industry are viewed in the Philippines, illustrating a perception of the situation of ballet in the country. This study aims to share an understanding of the reasons dancers leave ballet that can be helpful to the people in the ballet industry such as directors and ballet teachers to hone and assist in their abilities to shape aspiring ballet dancers. |
