Abstract | up here, disappear is a film that explores the intersection of grief, performance and identity through the lens of a trans woman mourning her lover’s inexplicable disappearance. The film follows her mourning through ritual and performance across different spaces—whether domestic, ceremonial, or theatrical—that tether her to her lover’s presence and absence, functioning as both coping mechanisms and sites of transformation. Drawing from Boss’s theory of ambiguous loss, the film examines the psychological dissonance of grieving someone who is neither fully present nor fully gone. It also intertwines grief with identity through Schechner’s performance theory and Butler’s gender performativity to articulate the trans woman’s need to be seen as shaped by her marginalization. By synthesizing these theoretical frameworks along with its uncanny aesthetic, the film interrogates how grief, identity, and memory stage themselves in cycles of presence and absence. In doing so, it asks: what happens when grief has no closure, and when performance becomes its own form of survival? |
