| Abstract | Lesbians are everywhere yet they are nowhere. The rise of the Premier Volleyball League has brought the sports into the mainstream by consolidating the teams and players into one league. Another factor is the rise of Jema Galanza and Deanna Wong (Gawong) as an onscreen and real-life lovers that captivated the fans and captured the attention of a wider audience. This study explores the mediated representation of a star lesbian couple in volleyball through the relationship of Gawong shown in their YouTube channel. This study is guided by Butler’s theory of gender performativity along with Foucauldian Queer Theory, Dyer’s Star Theory and Shtern et.al’s Performative Authenticity to better understand Gawong's performances with regards to their star image, performativity and gender expression on their Youtube vlogs. This study utilizes textual content analysis to streamline the research variables, 11 vlogs are then selected to lay out narratives and give a better picture of a lesbian relationship performing on vlogs. Based on the findings, the couple incorporated relatable and authentic narratives in Filipino language in their vlogs depicting ordinary activities. While their gender expression is not groundbreaking, their depiction of a loving and joyful relationship provides greater media representation. |
