Resource Title Exploring gender differences in response to competitive pressure: a study of male and female badminton athletes
Date Issued June 2025
Abstract Pressure is a common part of sports that affects athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally, impacting their performance and decision-making in crucial matches. Competitive pressure is the heightened emotional and psychological state experienced during crucial moments in a competition. This study investigates gender differences in response to competitive pressure among male and female badminton athletes. Using a purposive sampling method, the researcher selects collegiate badminton athletes from a university that competed in the UAAP Season 87, with 3 male and 3 female athletes as participants. The study was implemented by conducting an interview where a focus group discussion was employed. Open-ended questions were used to capture the detailed and personal experience of the athlete. By focusing on athletes’ performances during competitive scenarios, the research aimed to understand and compare how athletes of both genders respond to pressure. The study revealed that the source of male badminton players is usually from external pressure. It is from their coaches and teammates, but they often take it as motivation. In contrast, female players endure self-imposed pressure and pre-match anxiety. While males gradually gain confidence as a result of experience, females show more mental and physical worry, and confidence is influenced by the match circumstances. Males use task-oriented coping technique’s including mental rehearsal and self-talk, whereas females use emotional control and seclusion.
